AfD Employee Suspected of Spying for China
Top Candidate's Assistant Arrested
Suspect Lived in Dresden and Brussels
Authorities have detained an employee of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) political party on suspicion of espionage. Jian G, 43, worked as an assistant to Maximilian Krah, the party's lead candidate in the recent European Parliament elections. The arrest took place in Dresden, where the suspect reportedly resided alongside Brussels.
The General Public Prosecutor's Office (GBA) in Karlsruhe is overseeing the investigation. The suspect is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge, who will determine whether he should be held in pre-trial detention. Officials from both the GBA and AfD declined to comment further at this time.
According to ARD, a German public broadcaster, the arrest stems from allegations that Jian G spied on the Chinese opposition movement. Specifically, he is suspected of transmitting information from the European Parliament to individuals in China.
The incident has raised concerns about the potential influence of foreign powers on German politics. The AfD has faced scrutiny in the past for its ties to Russia, with some critics accusing the party of following a pro-Kremlin agenda.
