Donovan Mitchell: Rising Star in the NBA
From Denver to Cleveland
Born on September 7, 1996, Donovan Mitchell is an American professional basketball player currently playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Mitchell's NBA journey began in 2017 when he was drafted 13th overall by the Denver Nuggets. However, he was traded to the Utah Jazz on draft night.
Star Power in Utah
In Utah, Mitchell quickly established himself as a rising star. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in his first season and earned three All-Star selections during his five years with the Jazz.
In the 2022-23 season, Mitchell led the Jazz to a franchise-record 52 wins. He also averaged career highs in points (26.4), assists (4.2), and steals (2.1).
Trade to Cleveland
In September 2022, Mitchell was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a blockbuster deal that sent Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji, three unprotected first-round picks, and two pick swaps to Utah.
Mitchell has continued to impress in Cleveland, averaging 27.1 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game. He has also led the Cavaliers to a 22-12 record through 34 games.
Contract Situation
Mitchell is currently in the final year of his rookie contract with the Cavaliers. His contract extension eligibility will begin in the summer of 2024.
Mitchell has expressed his desire to stay in Cleveland long-term, but the Cavaliers will need to work out a contract extension that fits both their financial situation and Mitchell's value on the court.
